A local project called YMCA Positive Placements part of YMCA DownsLink Group running in Mid Sussex needs your help!
We recruit and train volunteer mentors to support young people on their journey towards education, employment or training. We also work with local organisations to create opportunities and placements for our young people.
Mentors can support young people to identify and overcome any barriers that they may be facing, such as low confidence, lack of work experience, issues with attendance or interview preparation. The project is for young people aged 16 – 25 years old, who are NEET (not in education, employment or training) and would like some extra support to achieve their goals.
Together they will identify and work towards achieving the young person’s goals – for example building confidence, improving time keeping, getting a job or accessing educational opportunities.
The project is running really successfully in Mid Sussex and we are now looking to recruit more volunteer mentors from the community. Project Coordinator Kate Coppock says, “We will be working with adult mentors from a wide variety of backgrounds to help young people aged 16-25 year olds in Mid Sussex move forward on their work journey.”
The project is running successfully in Horsham, Guildford and Brighton too with positive outcomes for young people. We have volunteers with a wide range of experience to support young people-volunteer mentors in Horsham have found the work really enjoyable, satisfying and at times a challenge. Some of the mentors say…
- The training and ongoing support is excellent.
- It’s great to see her with more sparkle and have a positive outlook – very rewarding.
- I have made new friends in other mentors
Positive Placements are looking for volunteer mentors who have 1-2 hours spare per week and are able to commit to mentoring a young person for at least 6 months. Full training and ongoing support is offered, and all volunteers will need to undergo a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check that will be paid for by the project. Potential volunteers should contact email@example.com for more information. No particular experience is needed but a passion to support a young person to make positive choices in their life, patience and a sense of humour are all welcome.
The project is also looking for local businesses that are able to offer work experience, apprenticeship or employment opportunities to young people. Positive Placements would offer full support to the businesses in setting up the apprenticeships.
