Local Lock man, Paul Harper-Smith from Lock Assist Ltd in Haywards Heath, has become one of only a handful of locksmiths in the UK qualified to assess apprentice locksmiths by passing the VTCT Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (QCF) course that he recently completed at Fareham College.

He has been working with Skills For Security as a trainee assessor since May last year which involves assessing locksmith apprentices at their full-time place of work and making sure that they know, understand and can carry out all the relevant tasks required to be a competent locksmith. Subjects covered  include Health & Safety, Risk Assessments, Data Protection, Master Keying, installation and picking to name but a few!   Learners need to achieve a certain number of credits to ensure they pass the course and gain their certificate.  Part of this includes attending the Master Locksmiths Association Training Centre in Daventry to complete 2 courses which contributes towards their coursework.

Paul said, “I’m really pleased to have passed the Assessor Course and very proud that all my apprentices passed their yearlong Locksmiths Course.  It gives them a solid grounding in all aspects of locksmithing and is certainly not one of those ‘Become a Locksmith in 2 days’ courses that you can find online. ”

After completing and passing the course, all the apprentices were given a permanent, full time position and will continue learning their trade while working with qualified locksmiths already in their respective businesses.

Paul is starting the year with a new intake of learners in January and looks forward to working with them and helping them gain their certificate in a year’s time.
