Sally Baldwin A PE teacher at Warden Park Academy, Cuckfield, who only began triathlon this year, has come third in the British Championships.

Sally Baldwin has also qualified to represent Great Britain in the World Championships in Edmonton, Canada this August and in the European Championships in June 2015 in Geneva.

Sally says, “It’s an honour to be chosen to represent my country and I would love to go to Edmonton, where I am targeting a top ten finish.

“At this point I still need to raise around £2,000 for flights and accommodation by August, and I would welcome any form of sponsorship towards this target.

“We are still building on the Olympic legacy in triathlon, and I feel there is great PR in being associated with local sporting success.”

Sally is a great role model to her students and, as an amateur sportswoman, is totally self-funded in her chosen sport, recently spending £4,000 of her own money on a new specialist bike, which she believes could shave a minute off her overall time.

If any businesses are able to help with sponsorship and wish to discuss what they could expect in return, please contact Sally as soon as possible on sbaldwin4@wardenpark.co.uk , as she needs to accept her place in the team by 15 July.

Vince CableVince Cable, Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills  has sent HHDBA the following letter:

In April I announced a further £100m investment in our manufacturing supply chains through the 2014 round of the Advanced Manufacturing Supply Chain Initiative (AMSCI). I am happy to inform you that the round is now open for applications at www.financebirmingham.com/amsci.

Supply chains underpin the competitiveness of our high value manufacturing sectors and create jobs across the country but have become progressively weak and ‘hollowed out’ with critical links in the chain disappearing from the UK altogether. Strengthening and rebuilding the UK’s supply chains is an important component of the Government’s industrial strategy.

The Advanced Manufacturing Supply Chain Initiative is a funding competition, launched in 2012, designed to improve the global competitiveness of UK advanced manufacturing supply chains and encourage major new suppliers to locate in the UK.

Since 2012, 44 projects have secured a joint public/private investment of almost half a billion pounds. Just over £200m of public funds leverages nearly £300m of private investment. Over 180 organisations, many of them SMEs, are involved in delivering the benefits of these projects in increased capabilities, better co-ordinated supply chains and over 15,000 direct and over 15,000 indirect jobs created or safeguarded.

Now is the right time to invest in our supply chains. Economic, technological and business trends are leading manufacturers to look again at the UK, both re-shoring work from overseas and capturing new capabilities. We need to support and encourage this welcome development or, in a globally competitive market, jobs will be elsewhere.

Further information on local events, trade shows and detailed guidance for applicants is available at www.financebirmingham.com/amsci. Government sector teams have been briefed to support applicants wherever possible.

I hope you will encourage businesses in your constituency to consider this opportunity. I look forward to seeing a diverse and innovative range of supply chain projects in 2014.

Alex KentMany businesses and organisations successfully use external advisers and coaches to provide independent perspectives, to help with business and individual growth and development. However, sometimes businesses would like to get these benefits but are not sure whether it will be affordable or cost effective.

Alex Kent at Haywards Heath based Alex Kent Associates Ltd has 30 years of wide ranging business experience. He is able to give local businesses the opportunity to see if some high quality external business advice and coaching would work for them – at little or no risk!

Alex is offering a complimentary advice and planning session to HHDBA businesses. The aim of each session would be to identify potential opportunities and a high level implementation plan. If the business would like to go ahead with the plan, then Alex Kent Associates Ltd would support the business with advice and coaching through the implementation. However, the business would only pay for this service if/when agreed milestones and financial benefits were achieved.

Please contact Alex before the end of July – email: mail@alex-kent.co.uk or call 07887 917657 – to find out more or if you would like to book a complimentary session.

Weald2014 has, so far, been a great year for Weald Professional IT Services. As well as being a highly significant year financially, Weald has acquired G2 Support, the highly reputable Managed Services Provider based in Brighton. The combination of these events has made it necessary for both organisations to move to much larger premises in Uckfield.

Weald Professional IT Services, who have over 25 years, experience in the professional services sector in and around Sussex, have invested in G2 Support, in part, to access their Managed Services experience, in particular in a market sector where clients have 200 plus employees. Weald is looking to help G2 develop their market share and grow their business substantially over the coming years.

Some of the combined team of Weald Professional IT Services and G2 Support

G2 Support, in turn, has gained access to the larger resources and skillsets of Weald Professional IT Services, including their data centre expertise and onsite support team. This will bring a greater range of knowledge and proven service offerings to G2’s clients.

Both sides of the amalgamated businesses are greatly excited about the event, the impact of which will undoubtedly benefit both sets of clients. Another crossover positive ensures that new products and services will be immediately available across the combined client base.

Going forward clients will notice a number of minor changes as systems and processes are integrated between both companies. However clients’ day to day contact and support provision will remain the same. The new team combination will remain focused on providing cutting edge support in both their Professional and managed IT Services throughout Sussex, Kent and the south coast.

MSDCRural businesses and communities are being encouraged to attend a workshop on how future LEADER funding could support them and the rural economy from 2015.

LEADER, part of the Rural Development Programme for England, aims to improve the competitiveness of farming and forestry, support a diverse and successful rural economy, and help to develop vibrant and thriving rural communities.

Two existing LEADER programmes in Sussex and East Hampshire have already provided more than £2.8 million of grants to rural businesses and community groups supporting 153 projects to date. They include the purchase of equipment and development of premises to support business growth, farm diversification and modernisation and community shops and other rural facilities.

The two LEADER groups will be bidding to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) for more funding for 2015 – 2020 to continue the good work. The proposed new LEADER areas would cover rural West Sussex, Lewes District and rural parts of Hayling Island. Local farmers, growers, small rural businesses and community groups in these areas would then be able to apply for grants to fund their project ideas.

West Sussex County Council Leader, Louise Goldsmith, said: “LEADER funding is incredibly important for West Sussex in helping to support our rural economy.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for our farming, forestry and small rural businesses and communities to find out how the LEADER programme could help them grow and for them to play a key part in helping to shape our bid to Defra.”

A workshop focusing on Arun and Chichester Districts and Hayling Island will take place at Chichester District Council Committee Rooms at 1 East Pallant, Chichester, on Friday 4 July. A second workshop focusing on Horsham, Mid Sussex and Lewes Districts will follow on 8 July at the South of England Showground, Norfolk Pavilion, in Ardingly. Both workshops will run from 12.00pm – 4.00pm.

To book your place, please email rdpeleader@westsussex.gov.uk indicating the workshop you wish to attend.

If you are unable to attend a workshop but would like to be involved, please contact Richard Chalk at Richard.chalk@westsussex.gov.uk or visit the LEADER webpages at www.westsussex.gov.uk/rdpeleader for further information.

St Peter and St JamesCarolyn Robinson from St Peter and St James Hospice have written to the association to say thank you for the £236.37 we’ve received so far from various raffles and tin rattling that has taken place at HHDBA events since we adopted them as the official charity for 2014.
