Business Association looks abroad for undergraduates

The lack of local interest in intern jobs in Mid Sussex has forced the Haywards Heath and District Business Association (HHDBA) to look abroad for young under graduates seeking an internship.

The HHDBA has accepted an application from a French university student as the pool of British applicants willing to join its intern scheme dried up.

Laurane FransquinAmid fears that the programme to help local young people gain experience of a working environment, which began in 2012, may ‘fade away’, Laurane Fransquin, a student at L’Universitie de Lyon has been accepted on a two month secondment.

Her first placement is with Kallikids in Brighton and her second with Brighton-based digital marketing company Local Edge.

According to Kallikids founder Karen Bach, Laurane is a hard worker, willing to learn and eager to please. She is also her second French student.

Karen is however, critical of an educational system that seems to leave students in the dark over how to apply for jobs and the respective merits of those jobs.

“It is frustrating trying to recruit young people as some don’t seem to understand how to stand out in the application process,” she said.

“They are not being taught to apply for jobs and they are not being told about the opportunities available to them. More needs to be done.”

HHDBA chair, Maureen Scholefield warmly welcomed Laurane adding: “The HHDBA is pleased to open its doors to applicants from across the Channel, but the programme is in place to help local, young people gain their first foothold in the working world and it would be a shame for them to miss out on this opportunity.

Laurane meanwhile thanked the HHDBA for what it has done for her: “I’m grateful for the HHDBA setting up the internship and I have really enjoyed helping them so far. I find it very interesting meeting people from different businesses and so having the chance to work in a few different companies suits me.”

Laurane’s internship will finish in July and she will be assisting the HHDBA throughout this time. She will then continue her studies in Lyon when she returns to France having been accepted on to a Marketing Masters programme.
