The Sales & Marketing and Business Opportunities tracks were well attended and delegates left the conference with ideas and plans for their own businesses. We also had a great writeup in the Mid Sussex Times.

WHAT DO YOU GET IF YOU CROSS A LAWYER WITH AN OSTRICH FARMER?

Players in the Park

Players in the Park, of course; an outdoor amateur theatre company which brings quality open air theatre to the people of Sussex – a natural assumption to make!  Well maybe not, but Cathryn Parker has had a lifelong love affair with the theatre since she was 6 years old.  She has been a member of Lewes Theatre Club since 1987 and has directed over 60 productions for many theatre companies.  Perhaps not the image of your average lawyer then?  So you will be even more amazed to hear that her husband Geoff who works slavishly behind the scenes of the many productions, designing and building sets and overseeing the whole technical production spends much of his time lovingly tending his flock of ostrich.

This fantastic couple really are a force to be reckoned with in the amateur dramatics world.  Their next big collaboration will be with St Peter & St James Hospice’s Fundraising Department with Bard in the Barn.  They will be putting on an eight night performance of Shakespeare’s ‘Taming of the Shrew’ from 11-14th and 18-21st June at Cockhaise Farm in Lindfield.  All seating is reserved and indoors and any profit is donated to the Hospice.  Tickets are on sale and there are substantial earlybird savings to be made if you book before Easter.  Go to www.stpeter-stjames.org.uk for more information.

THE PINK LADY DID IT AGAIN

Zumbathon

Esther Featherstone and several other HHDBA members did another 6 hour Zumbathon on March 16th, in aid of the Lindfield Arts Festival, of which Esther is joint Director for 2014.

Esther’s Pink Army raised over £1,500 during the event. See if you can spot the HHDBA members in the photo!

FREEDOM LEISURE’S DOLPHIN TRIATHLON RAISES £587.50 FOR ST PETER & ST JAMES HOSPICE

Sophie Mitchell Dolphin Triathlon

Sophie Mitchell, Age 11, completed 1.5 miles in 15 minutes towards the total

Visitors to the Dolphin Leisure Centre came in for a surprise on Thursday 20th February during the busy half-term week.  Dolphin Centre staff set up a mini gym for a day-long triathlon to raise money for St Peter & St James Hospice and invited the public to help them complete the distance from Haywards Heath to Paris, some 234 miles as the crow flies, in a competitively timed challenge.

Members of the public, including 11 year old Sophie Mitchell and Dolphin staff took part in the triathlon by running, cycling or rowing in fifteen minute stints to help cover the 234 mile distance.  The participants’ enthusiasm and commitment meant that not only was the challenge completed, but the distance was covered well ahead of schedule.

Andy Jones, Dolphin Centre Manager said: “We thought we set the bar high and were delighted that not only did we get to our destination but that we got there early.  We kicked off at 10 am and had arrived in Paris by 3.30pm.”

The Dolphin recently started supporting the hospice and the funds generated by the triathlon will help to buy physical therapy equipment for the hospice’s brand new Wellbeing Centre. Andy explained: “Supporting the physical therapy offered to people with life-limiting illnesses in the Wellbeing Centre is a natural connection with our commitment to health and fitness and we are very pleased to be able to show our support to the hospice in this way.”

The funds raised by the triathlon were boosted by the sale of cakes and cookies donated by hospice staff and volunteers and the sale of bracelets and rings made enterprising Year 6 girls from Lindfield Primary, which raised an additional £156.

Carolyn Robinson, Donor Relationship Manager at St Peter & St James Hospice said, “The triathlon was a great event and we’re really pleased that the Dolphin has been able to contribute to our work in a way that reflects their ethos of promoting fitness for all.”

JOIN THE SUPER HERO DAY GROUP

Super hero day groupTake part in Hero Friday and raise awareness and funds for Chestnut Tree House, your local children’s hospice. Dress up as your personal hero and join in the celebrations on Friday 20 June 2014. Or feel free to choose an alternative day during Children’s Hospice Week if you wish.

Children’s Hospice Week runs from 13 to 20 June 2014 and we are encouraging workplaces, individuals, schools, colleges and groups to take part and spread some fun, whilst also helping to raise much needed funds for Chestnut Tree House.

Who is your hero?

Maybe it’s a superhero such as Spiderman, Wonder Woman or He-Man. Or it could be a sporting hero such as Usain Bolt, David Beckham or Jessica Ennis. What about a pop hero like Michael Jackson or Lady Gaga? Or, like for many of the children who use Chestnut Tree House’s services, it could be someone who has touched your life like a parent, nurse, doctor or carer.

Businesses

Could your office take part and hold a Hero Friday fancy dress competition? Maybe get everyone to bring in cakes and sell them during the day, or even hold a raffle?

Individuals

Just wear your hero costume all day with pride! Maybe get sponsored to wear a really silly outfit all day?

Schools

If anyone has children at school, suggest they get involved! Why not get students to dress up and write a story about who their hero is and why? Maybe have superhero games in PE lessons, or hold a Kryptonite cake sale at lunchtime? There are lots of fun ways to get involved.

FURTHER EXPANSION OF LEADING LAW FIRM

Chris RandallSUSSEX solicitors Mayo Wynne Baxter have today announced that they are further expanding across the county. The latest growth comes from the upcoming merger with long established law firm Stuckey Carr & Co, who operate from offices in Storrington and Pulborough. This merger is due to complete on 1st July this year.

This merger is the third that the law firm will have completed in the last two years following the acquisition of Allen Ticehurst Solicitors in East Grinstead during 2012 and Forest Row firm PR Vince in October last year.

The completion of this deal will mean that Mayo Wynne Baxter will have eight offices in Sussex including those long established bases in Eastbourne, Seaford, Lewes and Brighton.

Stuckey Carr & Co was established in Sussex in 1843 and Senior Partner Robin Carr is the third generation of his family to have been at the firm. Along with Partner Peter Jones, Robin will remain on as a Consultant post merger.

Mayo Wynne Baxter’s Chief Executive, Chris Randall, said: “We are delighted to announce the upcoming merger with Stuckey Carr & Co. This is a great move for both firms and means that clients in Storrington and Pulborough will have access to a much broader range of legal services.

The additional two offices extend our reach into West Sussex and is a further step towards Mayo Wynne Baxter being the dominant law firm in the county.”

The news of this merger follows a recent announcement that the firm has invested heavily in new practice management software to further improve it’s already industry leading client service delivery. This state-of-the-art software will go live later in the year and includes functionality that can allow clients to have direct 24 hour access to their matter via a secure web portal.

COUNCIL SUPPORTS GOVERNMENT’S BOOST TO SMALL BUSINESSES

District Councillors have supported a scheme that will see over one thousand Mid Sussex businesses receive a reduction of around £1000 in their business rates next year.

On Tuesday 3rd March, Mid Sussex District Council’s Scrutiny Committee for Planning and Economic Development supported rolling out a new Government scheme to support small businesses. This will benefit many businesses with a rateable value of £50,000 or less which have visiting members of the public, for example shops, restaurants and cafés.

The Government funded scheme is for a two year period to help boost the local economy and support small businesses which provide services for the public. The District Council has published details of the types of businesses that will benefit and how the scheme will be administered. These will be formally agreed by Council on 26th March.

Councillor Gary Marsh, Cabinet Member for Economic Development said:

“We are delighted to support this new scheme, which will provide much needed relief to over a thousand Mid Sussex businesses. These businesses are the lifeblood of our district, providing essential services to residents and visitors and boosting the economy and prosperity of Mid Sussex”.

THE CASE FOR USING PSYCHOMETRICS

TimelessTime

TimelessTime has just published an argument in favour of describing personal characteristics of employees using psychometrics. The article will shortly go out in the Institute of Gas Engineers and Managers journal.

The article argues that just as engineers use systems modelling to predict the performance of an electrical or other system, so managers can use psychometrics to model the intelligence, personality, needs and other individual differences of staff.  This then allows managers to predict the behaviours that staff will exhibit.

Psychometrics has many applications in management but most especially in selection during recruitment and assessment during restructuring and change.

The article can be read at http://www.timelesstime.co.uk/articles/the-case-for-using-psychometrics/.  If you’d like to use psychometrics or would like to know more about the advantages, call us.
