SUSSEX LIVING UPDATE
Song of the Month: White Christmas – Bing Crosby
The December issue of Sussex Living magazine, which is all about Christmas – surely everybody’s favourite season.
Cuckfield’s Christmas Tree Festival is in its 11th year, and it’s looking more festive and sparkly than ever. The idea is pure genius: get local organisations to sponsor and decorate a tree, display all the trees in a beautiful village church and make a community event of it – all in the name of charity! Find out more on pages 7-11, and visit www.cuckfieldctf.org.uk for details of the event and how you can become involved.
The Christmas panto is a much loved British tradition – but have you ever wondered where it comes from? Turn to pages 45-46 for a bit of its history, as well as other countries’ quirky Christmas traditions.
If you fancy yourself as a bit of a Christmas conoisseur, why not try your hand at our ‘12 Days of Christmas Quiz’ on pages 56-58. It’s all about festive foods and there are three mouthwatering prizes to be won! Our thanks go to The New Inn (Hurstpierpoint), The Inn on the Green (Scaynes Hill) and Tottington Manor (Edburton near Henfield) for their generous assistance with the dining prizes.
We caught up with Peter Bourne, an avid collector of antique photography equipment, who was kind enough to share his wonderful collection of antique Thornton-Pickard cameras with us (pages 31-33).
Getting from London to Brighton before the railway linked coast and capital was an arduous business involving coaches, horses and regular stops at inns en route. Interestingly, many Coaching Inns have survived to this day, though perhaps without the equine facilities. Find out more on pages 61-62.
We would like to wish all our readers, advertisers and supporters a very merry Christmas and happy New Year.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO WEALD
25 years ago, on the 23rd November 1988 – “Weald Computer Maintenance Ltd” was incorporated.
Two young men began repairing, building and selling computers.
The good news is that 25 years later, we are thriving and seeing good growth this year. After a static period through the recent economic downturn, the last 9 months has shown excellent progress. We are re-investing in the company and strengthening our team to ensure that we deliver a service that exceeds our client expectations.
We have now increased to 5 x helpdesk, 2 x network engineers, 1 x senior consultant, 1 admin, 1 customer service, 2 x sales and last but not least the MD who is still active in the management of client accounts as well as defining our future.
We are looking forward to the next challenges that IT will bring and are currently working hard to restructure our team to ensure that our service level exceeds all expectations.
Our core business activity;
We support around 300 clients through Sussex, Surrey & Kent. Our clients vary in size and therefore our work varies greatly depending on the client requirement – http://www.wealdcomputers.com/clients
We are a strong and stable partner with an excellent reputation who can provide references across the South East. We are a Microsoft Cloud Partner, A DELL Premier Partner, HP Registered, Citrix Silver Reseller, VMware partner. We are able to commission BT lines, Demon Internet & Zen internet.
The “Cloud” is a specialist area of expertise in which Weald has a large presence. The client benefits here from greater flexibility than that offered by typical hosting providers. A selection of these specialist products are 365 office, internet access logging, internet access filtering, Barracuda spam and antivirus defence and online backup & disaster recovery solutions (with a difference.)
Although some of these are common skills, Weald has additional capabilities which some of our competitors do not.
We are invested to understanding each business individually and streamline processes in order to provide value to clients through technology. We have ideas ourselves that we put forward and are always interested to hear what each client feels IT can do for them.
• We have the ability to design and implement systems that meet with the desire to automate and streamline.
• We are competitive, but we recognise that the greatest savings are not always realised by low pricing but by well thought out system design.
We would welcome a free no obligation review of your current IT setup, whether you are looking to upgrade or looking at new technology we want to ensure you are getting the best value for service possible. Please contact Barry or Adam on 01444 241381, email firstname.lastname@example.org.
THE BIG GIVE CHRISTMAS CHALLENGE
St Peter & St James Hospice’s fundraising department is pleased to announce that we have completed the first phase of the Big Give’s Christmas Challenge, a national matched giving event.
Raising money to fund the work of one of our Community Nurses for a whole year, the first phase saw 18 special people and 1st Central Insurance in Haywards Heath pledge a total of £9,500. This has allowed us to draw the maximum amount from The Big Give Charity Champion pot, a further £9,500, making a matched pot of £19,000.
The next phase is in the name…the challenge! From 10am on 5th December, we are asking both existing supporters and those who are new to us to go on-line to The Big Give and make a donation. While funds last your donation could be doubled, using the matched pot of money. We need to raise a total of £19,000 on-line during this time to ensure we receive the entire matched pot.
Jo from the fundraising department said “Donors must go on-line as soon after 10am as possible – it is first-come, first-served until the money runs out. If you aren’t successful at first, please keep trying; funds are released gradually and it will make a huge difference to our patients and their loved ones.”
For more information and to find the link please go to www.stpeter-stjames.org.uk. Remember, your donation will not be matched until 10am on 5th December, so rise and shine to support your Hospice services.
TIME IS RUNNING OUT ON WINDOWS XP SUPPORT
Windows XP & Office 2003 support is ending 1st April 2014 – don’t let it affect your business.
SE Business Systems Ltd would like to make you aware that Microsoft are completely ending support for Windows XP (and Office 2003) come April 2014 meaning “you will no longer receive updates, including security updates, for Windows XP from Microsoft”.
Running Windows XP after this date leaves you very exposed to further advances in virus attacks as Microsoft will no longer be updating XP with security patches to protect against any security flaws discovered. SE Business Systems Ltd are currently in the process of advising all our customers who still have XP PCs so a plan can be put in place to upgrade.
With the retirement date set this has now become an urgent security issue which will need to be addressed. It is also important to note that staff may be using home PC’s & Laptop’s for work which should also be considered.
“Potential Business Impacts
The security and privacy implications of this event could have significant impacts on your business, so if you’re running XP you should plan to take action soon.
Without critical Windows XP security updates, your PC may become vulnerable to harmful viruses, spyware and other malicious software which can steal or damage your business data and information. Anti-virus software will also not be able to fully protect you once Windows XP itself is supported.
Many software and hardware vendors will no longer support their products that are running Windows XP as they are unable to get the Windows XP and Office 2003 updates. For example, the new Office leverages the modern Windows and will not run on Windows XP.
The risks of system failure and business disruption could increase because of the end of support, lack of supported software, and the increasing age of hardware running Windows XP.”
What can I do?
The latest version of Microsoft’s Operating system is 8.1 and the Office is 2013. “Windows 8.1 will run on some older PC’s, but not many and it is worth bearing in mind that using a PC that is more than 3 years old (typically machines still running Windows XP and Office 2003 will be 3 years + in age) you will be missing out on the enhanced speed, security and dependability of today’s modern devices.”
You can either choose to upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 8.1 (dependent on hardware compatibility) or you can look at purchasing a new PC to benefit from the developments in hardware technology as well as software enhancements.
If you do, you may be affected by a change to the law which means that young people are required to stay in education for longer.
If you employ younger workers who are not on an apprenticeship or any other formal training programme, you need to be aware that the Government has changed the law so that from September 2013, all young people are required to continue in education or training until the end of the academic year in which they turn 17.
The vast majority of 16 and 17 year olds currently employed are already undertaking some form of education or training, but there are some who will be affected by this new legislation, and it’s important that employers make themselves aware of this change.
The law remains unchanged for businesses which employ a young person on a part-time basis, alongside their studies, but if you employ a young person to work full-time hours, you may want to consider how you can support them to meet this new requirement placed upon them.

HHDBA WELCOMES NEW INTERN CHRIS
Chris Harris, intern number seven (or 007, as Maureen likes to call him) has now begun his internship with HHDBA. He has settled in well at Cullen Scholefield thanks to the help and guidance of Rob Gordon, one of the HHDBA’s first interns.
Without Hollie as Intern Coordinator, Rob has been helping bridge the gap, not only by helping Chris but also by taking on Hollie’s role at Cullen Scholefield until her replacement, Vickie Atkins, starts in January.
“I have enjoyed my time with HHDBA so far. I have appreciated having Rob’s help as we have found a lot of common ground and he has been a good guide. Starting the week before the AGM meant I was thrown in at the deep end but I am enjoying the challenge and looking forward to seeing what else the HHDBA has to offer me.”
We look forward to working with Chris in the months to come.
IS YOUR BUSINESS MISSING OUT ON THE BENEFITS OF A HIGHER APPRENTICE?
Are you a West Sussex business that wants to up-skill your workforce, improve productivity and get a great return on your investment?
West Sussex County Council is offering grants of £2,500 to companies across the county towards the cost of taking on a higher apprentice.
Higher apprenticeships differ from other apprenticeships because they allow managers to recruit someone who has some existing experience and/or a higher academic qualification.
Employers can use the funding on offer from West Sussex County Council to contribute towards the salary costs of a new higher apprentice or to up-skill current members of staff by putting them through a higher apprenticeship.
Bognor Regis based Real Time DC has been one of the first successful companies to apply for a grant.
Brian Pellett, General Manager at Real Time DC, said: “It is important to the growth of our business that we have the correct mix of sales and technical skills. The Higher Apprentice Scheme allows a good mix of external technical training we cannot provide whilst receiving our training on products and customer skills. The award of the grant provided the encouragement we needed to invest.”
The funding has been made available through West Sussex County Council’s Be The Business initiative, launched earlier this year to help boost the economy.
Training apprentices can be more cost effective than hiring skilled staff, leading to lower overall training and recruitment costs.
Apprentices tend to be eager, motivated, flexible and loyal to the company that invested in them. What’s more, as well as the funding on offer by West Sussex County Council, further government support might also be available.
West Sussex County Council’s ambition is to create 50 new higher apprentices across the county by February 2015.
Council Leader Louise Goldsmith encouraged organisation of all sizes to find out how the grants could benefit them.
Louise said: “Higher Apprenticeships will help young people across the county gain confidence and get some valuable experience of working for a local organisation which is all about developing a well trained work force in West Sussex to help our economy.”
In mid January we will have two compact, serviced offices both with Broadband available for rent upstairs at The Yews. One is 14 square metres in size and the other is 18 square metres. Both have access to kitchen facilities shared with several user groups.
The Yews Centre, which is on the corner of Boltro Road overlooking Muster Green , is both close to the railway station and to The Broadway so is very well-placed in Haywards Heath .
If you are interested in this opportunity do call in to speak to Helen or Sue, the Centre Co-ordinators, and have a look around the building which is home to over 20 small charitable groups and also available for rent for local events , such as conferences and meetings of all kinds.
SUNDAY 8TH DECEMBER, 2013 7.30pm – THE TRIANGLE, BURGESS HILL RH15 8WA
Prepare yourself for a party as the legendary That’ll Be The Day, the nation’s longest running rock ‘n’ roll variety show returns by popular demand with a Brand New Christmas Production on Sunday 8th December 7.30pm at The Triangle, Burgess Hill.
This hugely entertaining rock ‘n’ roll spectacular features a fantastic line up of knock-out hits from the 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s. A fresh and astonishingly versatile programme of music mixed with loads of new zany comedy routines to produce a show with a real feel good party atmosphere. So much so, that many members of the audience will feel they are having a night out with old friends
That’ll Be The Day – Britain’s touring rock ‘n’ roll comedy phenomenon – produces an annual special festive mix of pop hits, saucy comedy and a mini-panto.
Now in its 28th year of touring continuously in the UK and Europe, That’ll Be The Day is living proof that Rock ‘n’ Roll will never die. The show has music covering all eras from the 1950’s right up to Whitney Houston and features a talented cast of multi-instrumentalist/vocalists
Trevor Payne’s That’ll Be The Day Christmas Show is a production that has put down deep roots with its audiences in its 28 year history and most audience members know exactly what they’ve come for – rock and roll Christmas music, a bit of panto and variety show style comedy from a simpler time.
The show opens with a rollback of the years to the late 1950s with a fast tempo medley of rock ‘n’ roll greats including such Christmastime hits as Crying by Roy Orbison and You’re Sixteen by Johnny Burnette, The band keeps the show energized and on pace with various arrangements of former Christmas hits.
This isn’t a tribute act, but it’s full of tributes. The cast are not impressionists, but do fantastic impressions of our best-loved entertainers, and as a bonus; they are first class singers and musicians too.
Despite having been on the road for over 25 years, it is still as fresh as ever and great entertainment.
This pacy show features its multi-talented, five-piece, live band and five fantastic vocalists, complemented by a group of delightful young dancers.
It’s not hard to see why people keep coming back to this show time after time. The audience will be treated to a pick ‘n’ mix of popular music greats and comedy sketches, sprinkled with magical Christmas dust! There is even a Christmas panto. A rousing finale of Christmas hits will have the audience on their feet, topping off a hugely enjoyable evening of entertainment. It’s not subtle, it’s not highbrow, but it is very good fun.
