John de MierreMany members of HHDBA attended a packed service at St Paul’s RC Church in Haywards Heath on the 21st November for the funeral of John de Mierre.

John played an instrumental role in HHDBA over the years, in local council and in businesses. There was an address by Nicolas Soames MP, as well as emotional tributes by John’s family.

He will be truly missed.


HHDBA ConferencePlanning continues for the first HHDBA conference, which is scheduled for Friday March 7th 2014 between 9am and 1pm at Clair Hall in Haywards Heath.

The conference will focus on the themes of People, Money, Operations and Marketing with two Keynote presentations.

big-giveSt Peter & St James Hospice’s fundraising department is pleased to announce that we have completed the first phase of the Big Give’s Christmas Challenge, a national matched giving event.

Raising money to fund the work of one of our Community Nurses for a whole year, the first phase saw 18 special people and 1st Central Insurance in Haywards Heath pledge a total of £9,500.  This has allowed us to draw the maximum amount from The Big Give Charity Champion pot, a further £9,500, making a matched pot of £19,000.

The next phase is in the name…the challenge!  From 10am on 5th December, we are asking both existing supporters and those who are new to us to go on-line to The Big Give and make a donation.  While funds last your donation could be doubled, using the matched pot of money.  We need to raise a total of £19,000 on-line during this time to ensure we receive the entire matched pot.

Jo from the fundraising department said “Donors must go on-line as soon after 10am as possible – it is first-come, first-served until the money runs out.  If you aren’t successful at first, please keep trying; funds are released gradually and it will make a huge difference to our patients and their loved ones.”

South East Business SystemsWindows XP & Office 2003 support is ending 1st April 2014 – don’t let it affect your business.

SE Business Systems Ltd would like to make you aware that Microsoft are completely ending support for Windows XP (and Office 2003) come April 2014 meaning “you will no longer receive updates, including security updates, for Windows XP from Microsoft”.

Running Windows XP after this date leaves you very exposed to further advances in virus attacks as Microsoft will no longer be updating XP with security patches to protect against any security flaws discovered. SE Business Systems Ltd are currently in the process of advising all our customers who still have XP PCs so a plan can be put in place to upgrade.

With the retirement date set this has now become an urgent security issue which will need to be addressed. It is also important to note that staff may be using home PC’s & Laptop’s for work which should also be considered.

“Potential Business Impacts

The security and privacy implications of this event could have significant impacts on your business, so if you’re running XP you should plan to take action soon.

  • Security Risk

Without critical Windows XP security updates, your PC may become vulnerable to harmful viruses, spyware and other malicious software which can steal or damage your business data and information. Anti-virus software will also not be able to fully protect you once Windows XP itself is supported.

  • Software Issues

Many software and hardware vendors will no longer support their products that are running Windows XP as they are unable to get the Windows XP and Office 2003 updates.  For example, the new Office leverages the modern Windows and will not run on Windows XP.

  • Downtime

The risks of system failure and business disruption could increase because of the end of support, lack of supported software, and the increasing age of hardware running Windows XP.”

What can I do?

The latest version of Microsoft’s Operating system is 8.1 and the Office is 2013.  “Windows 8.1 will run on some older PC’s, but not many and it is worth bearing in mind that using a PC that is more than 3 years old (typically machines still running Windows XP and Office 2003 will be 3 years + in age) you will be missing out on the enhanced speed, security and dependability of today’s modern devices.”

You can either choose to upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 8.1 (dependent on hardware compatibility) or you can look at purchasing a new PC to benefit from the developments in hardware technology as well as software enhancements.

central-sussex-college-logoIf you do, you may be affected by a change to the law which means that young people are required to stay in education for longer.

If you employ younger workers who are not on an apprenticeship or any other formal training programme, you need to be aware that the Government has changed the law so that from September 2013, all young people are required to continue in education or training until the end of the academic year in which they turn 17.

The vast majority of 16 and 17 year olds currently employed are already undertaking some form of education or training, but there are some who will be affected by this new legislation, and it’s important that employers make themselves aware of this change.

The law remains unchanged for businesses which employ a young person on a part-time basis, alongside their studies, but if you employ a young person to work full-time hours, you may want to consider how you can support them to meet this new requirement placed upon them.

chris-harrisChris Harris, intern number seven (or 007, as Maureen likes to call him) has now begun his internship with HHDBA. He has settled in well at Cullen Scholefield thanks to the help and guidance of Rob Gordon, one of the HHDBA’s first interns.

Without Hollie as Intern Coordinator, Rob has been helping bridge the gap, not only by helping Chris but also by taking on Hollie’s role at Cullen Scholefield until her replacement, Vickie Atkins, starts in January.

Chris says:

“I have enjoyed my time with HHDBA so far. I have appreciated having Rob’s help as we have found a lot of common ground and he has been a good guide. Starting the week before the AGM meant I was thrown in at the deep end but I am enjoying the challenge and looking forward to seeing what else the HHDBA has to offer me.”

Are you a West Sussex business that wants to up-skill your workforce, improve productivity and get a great return on your investment?

West Sussex County Council is offering grants of £2,500 to companies across the county towards the cost of taking on a higher apprentice.

Higher apprenticeships differ from other apprenticeships because they allow managers to recruit someone who has some existing experience and/or a higher academic qualification.

Employers can use the funding on offer from West Sussex County Council to contribute towards the salary costs of a new higher apprentice or to up-skill current members of staff by putting them through a higher apprenticeship.

Bognor Regis based Real Time DC has been one of the first successful companies to apply for a grant.

Brian Pellett, General Manager at Real Time DC, said: “It is important to the growth of our business that we have the correct mix of sales and technical skills. The Higher Apprentice Scheme allows a good mix of external technical training we cannot provide whilst receiving our training on products and customer skills. The award of the grant provided the encouragement we needed to invest.”

The funding has been made available through West Sussex County Council’s Be The Business initiative, launched earlier this year to help boost the economy.

Training apprentices can be more cost effective than hiring skilled staff, leading to lower overall training and recruitment costs.

Apprentices tend to be eager, motivated, flexible and loyal to the company that invested in them. What’s more, as well as the funding on offer by West Sussex County Council, further government support might also be available.

West Sussex County Council’s ambition is to create 50 new higher apprentices across the county by February 2015.

Council Leader Louise Goldsmith encouraged organisation of all sizes to find out how the grants could benefit them.

Louise said: “Higher Apprenticeships will help young people across the county gain confidence and get some valuable experience of working for a local organisation which is all about developing a well trained work force in West Sussex to help our economy.”

In mid January we will have two compact, serviced offices both with Broadband available for rent upstairs at The Yews. One is 14 square metres in size and the other is 18 square metres. Both have access to kitchen facilities shared with several user groups.

The Yews Centre, which is on the corner of Boltro Road overlooking Muster Green , is both close to the railway station and to The Broadway so is very well-placed in Haywards Heath .
