UK’s top discus thrower to unleash 2013 Bike Ride

Monday 21st January 2013

Jade Nicholls, the UK’s top discus thrower (and local girl) will start the 2013 Greater Haywards Heath Bike Ride on 21st April. With registrations rolling in fast, she could be starting the biggest Ride to date.

The British Number 1 for the past two years, Jade is targeting quite a few medals in the future, starting with the European Team Championships in Gateshead in June, followed by the World Championships in Moscow in August this year. Then it’s the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in 2014, followed by the Rio Olympics two years later. She has represented England and Great Britain since 2006, when she won her first vest as a Junior and has been English Champion in 2011 and 2012.Her best throw so far is 60.76 metres – not that far off that thrown by Britain’s Men’s Olympian Lawrence Okoye in London last year!

Jade trains at K2 in Crawley and Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre in Horsham, where she also works part time, but she may be unique in that she has her own training throwing ‘circle’ on a farm locally, where she is very careful in throwing away from the assorted cows, sheep and even alpacas who share her field from time to time! Her father was a keen cyclist in his time, so Jade had no hesitation in accepting the invitation to fire the starting gun for the 2013 Greater Haywards Heath Bike Ride.

“I’m honoured to be starting the Bike Ride, which is a fantastic community event,” says Jade. “But it’s also an opportunity for younger aspiring cyclists to test themselves to maybe become the Wiggins of the future so we keep the Olympic flame burning.”

Riders can register online at www.hhbikeride.co.uk or in person at Haywards Heath Town Hall, Boltro Road, Haywards Heath. Tel: 01444 455694.
