In 2013, a new franchise will be let which will mean one provider will run the services now operated by Southern and First Capital Connect (plus some South East Rail including some East Sussex and Kent lines). The revenues for these lines are worth £6.4 billion, something like 20 per cent of the total rail revenues in the UK, and the new franchise will run for seven years.

The Department of Transport is seeking views on what the government should ask for from the franchise and there is a consultation open now – at http://www.dft.gov.uk/consultations/dft-2012-23/.  Views are invited from user groups, and business is certainly a very important category in that.  So if you wish to make a response please do – the consultation is open until 23rd August.
